Chapter Six

The next morning, Slavin still had a hard time believing what had happened with Dagan. He’d been planning on telling Dagan who he really was, while at the same time, Dagan had been planning on using Slavin’s position to force him to save his brother and his mother. Saying that they’d both been stunned would be an understatement.

Thankfully, Dagan had taken Slavin’s revelation well. If anything, he’d appeared even more relieved than he had been when Slavin had told him he could help. They hadn’t had much time to talk, because someone would realize something was happening if Dagan spent too much time in Slavin’s rooms, but Dagan had said he’d be back this morning, and Slavin was expecting him.

He was also expecting a phone call from the queen, but that would come in a few hours. In the meantime, he wasn’t quite sure what he, Orion, and Nithe were supposed to do.

The three of them were in the living room, picking at the breakfast a servant had brought in. They were worried, but Slavin had to believe everything would be okay. If he didn’t focus on that, he couldn’t stop wondering what would happen to them if it wasn’t. It wasn’t pretty.

But no matter what happened, Morven and the others would come for them. They’d be here tonight if Slavin didn’t tell them otherwise, which meant there was only a handful of hours left for him, his brother, and Nithe to spend here.

The sound of the door unlocking made all of them look up. Nithe and Orion tensed, ready to put themselves in front of Slavin, but didn’t have to, because Dagan was the one who stepped in.

He closed the door behind himself and turned to face them. “I have a lot of questions, but there isn’t time now. The king wants to see you,” he told Slavin.

Slavin grimaced. “Do you know what he wants?”

“It could be anything, but he wasn’t in a good mood.”

“That doesn’t bode well.”

“Maybe not, but as long as your queen agrees to take my family in, you’ll be out of here by lunchtime. This is the last time you’ll see him, and I don’t think he’ll hurt you. He still hopes Caven will come to get you.”

Slavin snorted. “Fat chance of that.”

Dagan grinned. “I’d say, considering where Caven is at the moment.”

The way Dagan had relaxed after Slavin had told him he was a spy was incredible. Slavin didn’t want to allow himself to think there could be something between them once they got back to the Ogorth clan, but he couldn’t stop himself. Dagan was trusting him with his family, the most important people in his life. Slavin would show him he deserved that trust.

Since the king didn’t enjoy waiting, the four of them left the rooms quickly. The few dragons they passed in the hallways stared, but then they’d stared before, too. They probably didn’t know what was happening exactly, which was good. Slavin already had enough trouble with the king. He didn’t want to add anything to it.
